RESPONSIBLE RECYCLING COMPANIES

The companies listed below are all companies that we have looked into. Be sure to look into companies that recycle before using their services. Some companies may advertise that they recycle responsibly, but really they send their products abroad. Before recycling your electronics with a company, call and ask if they ship any part of the electronics abroad. 
Companies certified by the Basel Action Network must meet the following requirements:
  • Must meet a health and safety system requirement
  • Must be able to define hazardous e-waste in terms that are understandable by people in other countries
  • Exporting hazardous e-waste to developing countries is prohibited
  • Must have safe on-site handling of the materials
  • Restrictions on where items can be disposed of
  • Meet child and prison labor laws
  • Transparency of the entire chain of custody of toxic materials for any customers who request it

According to the Staples Website "Retail customers can easily recycle their e–waste by simply bringing their used computers, monitors, laptops, and desktop printers, faxes and all–in–ones to any U.S. Staples store. Staples collected and recycled more than 6 million pounds of technology products in 2008 from our U.S. retail customers."
